From girls confronting popular messages about culture and body image to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren't gay, the students in Straightlaced illustrate the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing have on all of our lives.
Drawing on what we’ve learned from a year of screenings, conference presentations and workshops from around the country, the Straightlaced Discussion Guide provides simple, easy-to-use resources for sparking dialogue about the complex gender-based pressures affecting today’s youth. The Guide includes background on the film, key talking points, pre-screening activities, and discussion topics for educators, parents, and peers to use in conjunction with the film to facilitate conversation and explore possibilities for taking action. Three versions are available to customize the conversation for your specific context.
This Discussion Guide is still in development, so please share your feedback and additional ideas with us. Comments can be sent to Amy Scharf, Director of Educational Programs.
To complement this Discussion Guide, we are also in the process of developing a comprehensive Straightlaced curriculum guide, including a wide range of Straightlaced-inspired extension activities for classrooms and youth programs. Please look for this valuable resource in 2010!
